How to Take the Best Photo

  • AVOID ZOOM. For a head-and-shoulders portrait, fill the screen of your camera with a close-up. Do not use the zoom feature; the picture will be of lower quality. For a full-body portrait, be sure to include the whole body, so I’m not trying to figure out what the tail looks like!
  • EXPRESSION. Try to take a picture that shows me their unique character. Having someone nearby with a treat or toy can work out well.
  • POSTURE. Look carefully at their pose. Take your picture at their level. Kneel down, or put the little ones safely up on a stable surface. Include what you want in the portrait: tacks for horses, special collars, or kerchiefs. If you don't want it, remove it safely so that I don't have to guess at what's underneath.
  • LIGHTING. Aim for beautiful natural lighting, either outside or near an inside window. Filtered light that still provides shadows (like a cloudy day) works well. The picture of Moose to the right shows a well-lit picture.
  • EMAIL "ORIGINAL" SIZES. Screenshots, chats, and Facebook/IG photos are downsized and offer fewer details. When they ask you, always select the highest quality.
  • SEND MULTIPLE PHOTOS. I may find details in another photo to help. Memorial portraits can be challenging, but I will try to do my best with whatever photos you have on hand.

What Do I Do With Your Photos?

I hand-draw graphite or colored pencil portraits from your best photos. I use professional light fast pencils and premium-grade, heavyweight archival paper or board and mail them matted and wrapped in sturdy rigid board packaging ready for your favorite frame.

Feel free to view my pencil portraits gallery to see previous work and read testimonials from previous recipients.

If you are looking for a hand-drawn pencil portrait of one of your furry, fluffy, feathery, or scaly friends, I would be happy to help.

I look forward to drawing for you!

Prints or Cards Available Upon Request

Prints are beautifully and professionally reproduced by a local printer on heavy archival bright white matte paper with the option of a white mat for an additional charge.

We can also professionally reproduce these images on satin matte canvas, stretched and stapled complete with a hanging wire so that it is ready for your walls. Ideal décor for pet providers, lovers of a particular breed, or for clients who would like a duplicate portrait for another space.

Cards are available in a notecard (3x5) or greeting card (5x7) sizes and are printed on request by a local printer on high-quality paper. Each box contains 10 cards. Costs vary based on the number of cards ordered, but are never more than $2/card.

I have a selection of Christmas designs that I will post closer to the holidays.
